Laser Therapy for Dogs and Cats

Sometimes, dogs and cats can use a little extra help with pain relief and/or healing. Enter laser therapy, a drug-free, non-invasive modality that causes no discomfort or harmful side effects! At Animal Care of Greenville, we can use laser therapy for dogs and cats to treat a wide range of conditions, including injuries, diseases, and congenital disorders.

How Laser Therapy Treatment Works

Treating your pet with our therapeutic laser involves exposing the affected area to light particles emitted at a specific frequency. These particles penetrate the skin and go deep into the muscle and connective tissue, where they trigger cell activity and help to repair damaged cells. This process is called Photobiomodulation and has proven extremely beneficial to our pets, just like it has for humans undergoing similar treatment.

What Does a Typical Laser Therapy Session Look Like?

Sessions take between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the condition. Your pet will be required to wear protective eye goggles as a precaution (our attending staff member will be wearing them, too!), and will likely be able to lay down for the duration of their session. The hand-held device that emits light particles also generates a subtle warmth, which your pet should find quite comfortable and relaxing.
For acute conditions, one or two sessions are usually enough to treat the problem. For pets with chronic issues, such as arthritis, multiple sessions will be required. Fortunately, the effects of laser therapy are cumulative, so as their treatment progresses, your pet will require fewer and less-frequent treatment sessions.

The Benefits of Laser Treatment

The core benefits of laser therapy for dogs and cats are:

  • Reduced pain and inflammation
  • Faster healing
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Improved mobility
  • Increased energy

Conditions We Can Treat with Laser Therapy

We can recommend laser therapy to help with treating many different conditions*, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip/elbow dysplasia
  • Post-op healing and recovery
  • Bone fractures
  • Muscle and tendon injuries
  • Ear infections
  • Lick granulomas
  • Burns and other skin injuries
  • Wounds
  • …and more
*We cannot use laser therapy to treat pets that have or may have cancer. Exposing cancer cells to the infrared light particles of our laser could cause them to multiply and spread more quickly.
